What Are Landrace Strains?

A landrace strain is a cannabis plant variety with the same genetics as the original strain indigenous to the region from which it evolved. All modern day hybrids stem from landrace strains that began in the Hindu Kush region, which is thought to be the first landrace strain in existence. Other landrace strains evolved as the cannabis plant was introduced to new regions such as Africa, Asia, South America, North America and other areas. Finding a true landrace strain today is rare, although not impossible. A true landrace strain possesses characteristics and DNA genetics that have not been altered for thousands of years. Cannabis seed breeders today create a variety of hybrids with properties and characteristics which all stem from particular landrace strains.
