Cannabinoids refers to chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant that join the cannabinoid receptors in the brain and body. The cannabis plant produces between 80 to 100 cannabinoids although the two main cannabinoids are delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).

THC is the cannabinoid responsible for strong psychoactive effects which produce the high that people want from smoking marijuana. CBD is the cannabinoid thought to have anti-psychoactive effects and can help to moderate the high caused from the THC. CBD is also thought to reduce some negative effects such as anxiety and provide pain relief for many conditions.

Cannabinoids interact with the receptors of the endocannabinoid system involved in various functions such as anxiety, pain sensation, depression, and appetite.
