Is Cannabis Legal in Downers Grove, IL?

When recreational marijuana first became legal in the state of Illinois, with legislation passed in 2019 taking effect Jan. 1st, 2020, counties and townships could choose to ‘opt-out’ of allowing recreational dispensaries within their city limits. This would not impact the current Illinois Medical Cannabis Patient Program established in 2014. Downers Grove initially opted out of allowing recreational dispensaries in 2019, although recently voted in December of 2020 to approve recreational marijuana at a Village Council meeting.  Adults 21 years of age and over can now purchase and possess up to 30 grams of marijuana without a medical card.  Downers Grove passed three ordinances to allow the sale of cannabis;  to end the zoning ordinance provisions, to amend the municipal code to impose a tax and to repeal provisions regarding adult use marijuana businesses.
