Medical marijuana is the term used to describe cannabis, or marijuana, that is used for medicinal purposes. Cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, such as THC and CBD, the two most well-known cannabinoids, are proven to have therapeutic benefits in particular formulations. Even though cannabis is still illegal on the federal level, the US Food and Drug Administration, FDA, has approved some THC-based medications, such as dronabinol (Marinol®) and nabilone (Cesamet®) that help people with nausea, particularly for patients undergoing chemotherapy for cancer treatment. These drugs are also used to stimulate the appetite for other diseases, such as AIDS. A CBD-based medication called Epidiolex® is also approved by the FDA to treat seizures in patients with forms of epilepsy and other diseases that cause seizures. There is a lot of research on how THC and CBD treat other conditions and how other cannabinoids provide medicinal benefits, including CBN and CBG.

Patients that live in states with legalized medical marijuana programs can ask their physician about the benefits of various cannabis strains and cannabinoids to help treat their specific condition or symptoms. The Marijuana Policy Project, MPP, offers more information about all states in the U.S. that have medical marijuana laws and what the laws are in all states.
