Caryophyllene is a terpene found in cannabis and is the only known terpene that also acts as a cannabinoid, with the ability to activate the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and bind to both CB1 and CB2 receptors. Caryophyllene is also found in black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, hops, basil, and oregano, with a spicy, warm aroma similar to cloves and cinnamon.

Caryophyllene is used as a flavoring in foods to provide a peppery taste and as health supplements or part of cannabis consumption to provide anti-anxiety and pain relief and has also been shown to help with substance addiction. Some studies suggest this terpene/cannabinoid can actually reduce stress on genes, thus increasing lifespan.
