Photosynthesis is the process that plants use to convert sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into chemical energy that fuels the plant’s activities and produces energy-rich organic compounds and oxygen. Without photosynthesis, life on Earth would cease as there would be little food or organic matter and most organisms would disappear. Without photosynthesis, the atmosphere in time would become nearly devoid of gaseous oxygen.
