History of the Cannabis Cup
Amsterdam is the birthplace of the cannabis cup, founded in 1988 by High Times editor Steven Hagar. The Netherlands was a natural choice to start this competition, as consumption of recreational cannabis has been tolerated since 1976. Amsterdam is home to the most concentration of these “coffee shops” where users can purchase and consume their flower in the same location without fear of persecution.
The acceptance and use of cannabis has experienced quite a journey over the last 35 years, and now you can find many competitions to honor those skilled in the craft across the U.S. and worldwide.
